At this moment in history, more than ever before, it is time we question the basic building blocks of our communities. Our communities must be better designed and do more to improve our lives.

At its core, the reason that for the last couple thousand years humanity has come together in towns, villages and cities, is the result of a basic natural law. Humanity is more productive when working together. We are more productive and more creative when we are working in teams, especially when it comes to the creative or knowledge economy.

Physical proximity matters, and San Jose has a huge advantage in location, for its adjacency to the global epicenter of technology, not to mention its climate. If the metaphor for good city-building is a four-legged chair, then in no particular order of importance, the first leg is the built environment, the second is the energy infrastructure, the third is the cultural fabric, and the fourth is the transportation infrastructure.

There are a number of things that we are trying to accomplish with this initiative. We started off by attempting to address the shortcomings of the workspace people were asked to work in. Once we began to understand Silicon Valley better, it became obvious that the challenges and opportunities went well beyond the perspective of the workspace, to the fundamental tenets of this vital part of the world.
